Ten years ago, hardly anyone had heard of online dating. People were just starting to use email for personal and work purposes, but if you had asked those people then if the Internet would become what it is today, they probably would have told you that it wasn’t the Internet, but email that was important. However, just look at where eBay, PayPal and Google have brought us. The answer is clearly that the Internet has burgeoned in ten years into a place where you can do anything, from shopping to finding your soul mate.

Many matchmaker sites offer a place to post online dating personals, which has enabled the massive growth of using an announcement to find a boyfriend or a girlfriend. The reason why these profiles on the Internet are so popular is that pictures can be included, and the profile offers potential dates much more information than the old-school newspaper version that looked something like “SWF, 23 for SWM, 20-45-must love long walks on the beach.” These types of announcements simply did not offer enough information to entice potential dates.  Read more...
